Day 1
Arrival to Narsarsuaq. Pick up at the airport and info meeting at the local café.
In the afternoon/evening we recommend the little hike up to the viewpoint on "Signalhøjen", the "signal hill". Narsarsuaq is a former American military base and many remnants tell of that time like the abandoned installations of the radio station on the hill.
The beautiful walk up takes about 3/4 of an hour leading through lush vegetation with flowers in all colours and birch trees growing higher than yourself - a fact seeming normal to you, a rarity in Greenland. From the hill top you have an impressive view of Narsarsuaq's river delta, the glacier and also on the village of Qassiarsuk on the other side of the fjord.
Accommodation at Narsarsuaq Hostel for two nights.

Day 2
Day hike to the Narsarsuaq Glacier descending from Greenland's vast ice cap, situated at only 8 km from Narsarsuaq. The beautiful trail leads you through a diverse landscape passing the Flower Valley with its meandering milk coloured glacier river before ascending 300 m to a plateau with magnificent view down on the glacier. You can stop here enjoying the view or take a refreshing bath in one of the small lakes on the plateau. Or add another ½ hour walk down to touch the ice!
The hike goes back the same way.

Day 3
In the morning boat transfer aross the fjord to Qassiarsuk. The village is also known as Brattahlid, the place where Erik the Red settled in year 982. Today it's an agricultural village with thriving sheep farms, a perfect combination of history and modern Greenlandic rural life. A visit to the norse reconstructions of Tjodhildes Church and the longhouse is a must (admission not included). The village has a school, a church and a little shop.

Day 4
Day hike to the sheep farms of Tasiusaq located at the Sermilik fjord on the other side of the peninsula. It is a relative easy hike following tractor tracks through an impressive landscape spotted with small, blue lakes. Alternatively you can follow the sheep trails through the rolling hills.
There are good chances to see the White-tailed Eagle or peregrin falcons. For sure you will see sheep which roam the mountains freely during the summer months. It's a beautiful walk, passing various small lakes. On the hightest point on approx. half the way you'll have an amazing view on both fjords.
Only two sheep farming families live in Tasiusaq, at this truly beautiful spot, the fjord almost almost filled with icebergs in all sizes and shapes.
From Tasiusaq you can take the sheep track leading to the neighbouring farm Nunataaq. It is a stunning hike along the innermost part of a fjord. From Nunataaq you can take another tractor road leading back to Qassiarsuk. The round trip is about 20 km.

Day 5
Hike to the sheep farm Sillisit, located south of Qassiarsuk on the ice fjord. The hike is easy following a gravel road (about 14 km). Your luggage will be transported by car/boat. Sillisit is an idyllic spot surrounded by beautiful landscape. You'll stay at a farm run by a Greenlandic family which gives you an authentic insight into modern rural life in Greenland. It is possible to buy local dinner at the farm (not included in the price).
Accommodation on the farm.

Day 6
Boat transfer from Sillisit to Itilleq, the disembarking point for the village Igaliku. Following the gravel road it's an easy 1 hour (4km) hike along the "Kings Road" (named after the Danish King Frederik 9th's visit in 1952) to Igaliku. It's a beautiful walk among lush green farm lands. The road ascend lightly and from its highest point you have a beautiful panoramic view on the picturesque village of Igaliku down below, its colourful houses, the blue waters of the fjord and the impressive mountain range on the other side.
Accommodation at Gardar Hostel for two nights.

Day 7
Igaliku offers several great hiking opportunities. We recommend a day hike (15-20 km) to the Plateau from where you'll have a superb view of the Qooroq Ice fjord where the ice bergs stranded on the moraine form an almost perfect half circle, and the enormous glacier at the head of the fjord. The perfect place for a picnic!
On your way back watch out for precious minerals and beautifully shaped stones, for instance the shining "moon stone" (Labradorit).
Another popular day trip is the "Waterfall hike" (15 km). If you feel up for it you can combine it with climbing the top of Nuuluk (823 m) just south of Igaliku (20-22 km).
But also Igaliku itself is worth exploring. During the time of the Vikings it was the episcopal seat (Gardar) with South Greenland's biggest farm stead. Ruins of the cathedral, the stables and buildings of the inhabitants give an idea of the former glory.
Some newer history can be learned about in the little museum in the church. In 1782 Anders Olsen and his Greenlandic wife Tuperna established themselves in the fjord and started the era of modern agriculture.

Day 8
In the morning you'll walk back the King's Road to Itilleq while your luggage is being transferred by car. Boat transfer from Itilleq to Narsarsuaq. If you have time before your flight check out the local museum featuring the history of Narsarsuaq during its time as US military base.
Departure to Reykjavik (check in one hour before).

Meeting point You will be picked up upon arrival at Narsarsuaq airport.
Hikes The hikes between the hostels/farms are easy following gravel roads. The longest is about 14 km. Your luggage is transported by car.
The optionol day hikes can be more demanding and up to a 22 km round trip but you can always chose a shorter and easier alternative.
Hiking maps Hiking maps can be bought on site.
Accommodation Sleeping bag accommodation at a farm and in hostels in 2 or 4-bed rooms.
You have to bring your own sleeping bag or rent it on site for EUR ... / ... DKK for one week (including inlet).
Meals Meals are not included in the price.
Cooking facilities are available at all places. There are grocery stores in Narsarsuaq, Qassiarsuk and Igaliku. Please check back with us for opening hours before arrival since they are limited especially on weekends.
Dinner at Sillisit farm should be ordered in advance. In Igaliku you can order dinner at the country hotel and in Narsarsuaq there is a restaurant and a cafeteria at the hotel.
Mosquitos Yes, there are mosquitos but: most of all only in July and not in all places. The areas around Qassiarsuk and Igaliku are for instance almost 100% mosquito free - some say because the mosquitos don't like the smell of the sheep...
If you come between the end of June and the middle of August we recommend to bring repellent and a face net.

Temperatures in South Greenland can vary notably from morning to evening, from day to day, from one place to another. The weather in summer can change rapidly from blue skies with a burning sun where you sweat in your T-Shirt to storms with rain and even snow. The Foehn, a warm fall wind coming from the ice cap is a frequent phenomenon. It is therefore recommendable to prepare for everthing when packing your bags. Layer technique has proven to be the most useful. Some recommendations:

Boots and Clothing

  • Hiking boots – the boots should be made of leather (or leather and synthetic) with high cut to give sufficient ankle support. Preferably the sole should be soft but robust. GoreTex or alternative waterproof membrane is a preferable extra
  • Long sleeve shirt (thermal underwear) – wool or synthetic
  • Light wool or fleece sweater (2nd layer)
  • Trousers (2nd layer) – strong and light material that dries quickly, wind resistant and water repelling preferable
  • Rain jacket or an anorak with a hood
  • Rain trousers - waterproof and breathable material
  • Gloves – wool or synthetic (polypropylene / polyester)
  • Socks – wool or synthetic. Two or three pairs
  • Hat or Balaclava – wool or synthetic

Other gear

  • Day backpack
  • Sleeping bag – a basic sleeping bag with no specific temperature rating is sufficient for this trek since all the accommodations are heated
  • A suitcase for the baggage that is transported between accommodations
  • Towel – best of fast drying material
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Water container – pet plastic bottle
  • Mosquito repellent and face net
  • Sun/rain hat or a cap
  • Walking poles (the terrain is not difficult but some poeple just feel more comfortable with it)
  • Thermal mat (for lunch breaks)
  • Camera, spare batteries, a memory card or films
