Riding in the Footsteps of Erik the Red

The peninsula in Greenland's South between Qassiarsuk and Tasiusaq is historical land. It was here that Erik the Red and his fellowmen settled when they arrived in Greenland in 982 AD. Remnants of the old farmsteads are spread all over the area.

Eric gave the country its name, Greenland, a paradox looking at the huge ice mass that covers 80% of the country's surface. When you arrive to South Greenland, though, you will immediately understand where the name comes from. The sheltered valleys of the Southern fjords are green fertile land, ideal for farming, in Eric's times as well as today. The modern Greenlanders raise sheep here much the way the Vikings once did, the animals roaming the mountains freely during summer. They will be our steady companions during the journey. But this is not all the "wild" life we're going to meet. Sea eagles are notorious inhabitants of the area as well as peregrine falcons. Maybe we even see seals out in the fjords.

Of the eight days of the trip, five will be spent on horseback. Our Icelandic horses are owned by the local sheep farmers, authentic "working horses" used to gather the animals during fall. In the summertime, they have "holidays" and time to carry visitors through their beautiful homeland.

Day 1 - Arrival to South Greenland
Flight to Narsarsuaq in the morning. From Narsarsuaq we will be travelling by ship to Qassiarsuk. There we will meet our horses and test the equipment that we will bring along the actual horse riding trip. During the day we will also visit the ruins of the ancient Viking farmsteads as well as the reconstructed farm of Eric the Red before having dinner. The night will be spent in a local hostel.

Day 2-6 – On horseback
Five days on horseback. Each day we will spend five to six hours riding. We will bring packed lunches each day when we arrive at the sheep farms/hostels our luggage will be there and dinner will be served before we retire.

Day 7 – Riding and Greenlandic barbeque
We return late in the afternoon to Qassiarsuk where we celebrate our arrival with a nice Greenlandic barbeque (could also take place another day). The night will be spent at the hostel.

Day 8 - Departure
After breakfast, short boat transfer over the fjord to Narsarsuaq and flight back to Reykjavik.
